USB Host Shield 2.0 with UNO for comm to FTDI USB-ttl

Hi, folks. I am having trouble with using a ebay chinese USB Host shield 2.0 with a real Arduino UNO R3.
I have a sketch from a FTDI loopback example in the USBhost library.

I see that there are no new posts here for the USB Host Shield 2.0 since 2016 or 2017.
Is there any later information ?

I have the USB host shield connected to a chinese? USB-to-TTL converter with FT232RL chip.
The USB state never gets to USB State running ( 0x90 I believe).
It only ever gets to USB state = 0x12 = waiting for device.
It gets to the same state whether the FT232RL boardlet is connected or not connected.
I have MISO, MISO, SCk, and SS\ pins correctly assigned. I am not sure about the INT pin; it now is connected to UNO P9.

If the USB Host Shield 2.0 is still available from China via ebay, someone must be having success with it ?
How did they achieve their success ??

Thank you for any help.

The best library for USB Host and Arduino I know:
