USB Host shield hex converter?

I've been looking over the schematics of the USB Host shield for the arduino and I saw that there was a hex converter in between the Max3421 and the microcontroller. Could somebody explain why it is needed?

Looks like the MAX3421E is running on 3.3V and the Hex Converter is used to shift the 5V logic of the Arduino down to 3.3V logic.

Ohhh so it its needed, I need to find one that is a smaller package.
