I have no serial port on my laptop. and I have an Arduino board with serial port. so will there be any problem if I use a USB to serial converter. I'm using Linux platform
USB to serial converter... Linux platform
I am using a Belkin UC232A on my serial-portless Dell laptop running Centos 5.5 Linux. It comes up as /dev/ttyUSB0. No fuss, no muss, no drivers, no nothin'. It just works.
In addition to that particular product, I can say that all of the FTDI devices in a number of USB-TTL converters that I have (FT232 serial port, FT245 parallel FIFO I/O) and in the "genuine" Arduino Duemilanove show up and "just work" on my Linux workstations (every single one of them) with no hassle at all. Imagine that! No hassle!
I feel that just about any more-or-less "standard" (if there is such a thing) USB-Serial adapter "should" work. but all I can say for sure is that IWFMYMMV. (It Works For Me; Your Mileage May Vary).

Dave
