Hi,
I have a USB to TTL UART module (http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/ODAwWDgwMA==/z/19wAAMXQIrFSJayL/$(KGrHqJ,!qIFIYlwfI!UBSJ,yLZyz!~~60_12.JPG) , which I connected directly to the Arduino pro Mini 3.3v (with nothing else attached) to try the blink program and see if I can upload a program.
I firstly got this message
avrdude: stk500_getsync(): not in sync: resp=0x00
But on further inspection realised the USB to TTL UART module was very hot - would someone have an idea as to what may be heppening here?
The connections are correctly plugged in, I am sure of that.
Any ideas?
Very hot is very wrong.
When it is getting hot without the Arduino board connected, it is broken.

I'm happy that you're sure about that because that module you linked to doesn't look like it supports 3V3 on the signal lines. Does your Arduino still work? Can you show us how you connected the module to your Arduino (photo)?

Hi Peter_n, thanks for your reply,
Indeed I was mistaken, and having eliminated the 3.3v connection it since had worked.
No damage to the arduino or module thankfully.
problem solved. Thankyou
