Use a RGB led via Wifi

Hi guys, i have a personal project where i want to light a RGB Led (or a matrix) via WiFi.
I'm trying to understand what i need or what is better for me.
I'll try to explain better: i'll install an arduino with the led, a buzzer and the wifi module downstair and using a pc upstair i'll connect to a simply html page and when i'll press a button the RGB will light.
Now, what's better? An arduino shield or an ESP8266?
What do you recommend?
What other thing can be useful for this project?
Thanks to all!

What matrix? Direct drive, or intelligent RGB LEDs?
