Use Arduino as OBD1 reader?

Hey guys,

I have an Arduino Uno that I got bought for an engineering class my freshman year of college. I've been having some car troubles lately, and I need an OBD1 scanner. While looking around on the internet, I stumbled across this post here where a guy used a different Arduino unit to read his OBD1 port:DIY: - How To: Scan your OBD1 6.5 for less than $10! | Diesel Place

Pretty much all he did was use the Arduino as a bridge between the OBD1 port and the USB port on his computer. The TunerPro RT software does all of the work. Since my uno has has the RX and TX ports, would I just be able to hook up the Arduino exactly like that? Or would I need to do more? I'm assuming that I'd probably have to do some coding. It's been a while since I've used this thing.

Thanks guys.

First thing you need to do is purchase a FT232RL USB to Serial Module.

If I'm understanding all that I'm reading, he's not using an Arduino at all.

The ebay posting has Arduino in the name, and the board looks really similar to mine, so I thought maybe. Is it possible for me to somehow setup my Arduino to do the same thing? I'd rather not have to spend $10 when I already have this Uno laying around.

This suggests that all I would have to do is wire the reset to ground and it would work:http://forum.arduino.cc/index.php/topic,18243.0.html

Well, that looks like your answer, then.

A lot of ebay listings have arduino in the name, but they are not arduinos. They are various gadgets that you may ( or may not ) be able to use as an accessory to an arduino. The names of ebay listings often include a lot of irrelevant junk words, because that's how search engines ( like Google ) work.
