Use Arduino as relay controller

(I've never had/used an Arduino.)

Is it possible to use an Arduino to control relays? I want to connect an Arduino to my computer and run a program on my computer that will make the Arduino activate relays.

My objective is to connect a Kinect to my computer, have a program process that input, and tell the Arduino activate certain relays.

I don't think the programming will be an issue, since I'm well-versed in Java and can muddle my way through other languages, but hardware-wise, is the above feasible?

The short answer is: Yes, it is absolutely possible
And it will be quite easy to make as well.
So I'm sure it will be no problems at all for you.

Is that a serious response? The double smileys seem suspicious.

And to make the hardware side go a little easier here is a list of relay boards that can work well with an arduino:

Google "arduino relay"

Plenty of information.
