Use Arduino R3 as serial-to-usb converter to program (6 channel) radio

I have researched (and learnt quite a bit), but I have little experience in programming and only understand a bit. I would like to use the Arduino R3 (more specifically, the FT232RL chip) to connect the radio to my (windows 7, 64 bit) laptop.

I have connected the arduino to the radio (5V, Rx, Tx, GND, but not PPM) and connected the RESET to the other GND on the arduino to put it into Tristate mode. Some people seem to say that I have the remove the Atmega chip. Unfortunately, when I connect the Arduino to my laptop and look under device manager, it doesn't seem to be able to find any drivers.

So, my questions are: leave the Atmega on, or remove it? and which drivers do I need?

EDIT: Link to my specific radio:

The radio? That's pretty vague.

Woops! Sorry, forgot to elaborate. Best way to describe it is a link to the actual thing I guess: It is a full size radio (with two sticks).
