use of arduino mega2560 in indusrty...

i want to make a small project in which i will take 5v input from a machines and feed it to my computer using arduino mega 2560, when ever the machine is turned off the the timer on the computer will start to count the total stoppage time of a machine.
My question is "is arduino mega 2560 reliable for doing this? the total number of machines will be 7-8.

My answer is "Yes".

are you the guy with the Ferrari who only uses it to drive down the driveway to get the mail ?

you can have the PC monitor external voltages and be used as a time clock.

of course you can make this work. and yes, the Arduino, any one, will last for years in this application.

I assume you require that the data is stored in the PC for other reasons.

if not, you can have the Arduino monitor all your machines and send the data to a web page.
the arduino is more than capable of monitoring the time and storing and displaying the run hours and the off hours.
