Currently I am using 4x 1.2V batteries (4.8V).It is indeed well below the 7-12 V specified for the Nano, but so far it seems to work correctly despite this low voltage.
Then use the Vcc pin instead of the Vin/RAW (exact naming varies between boards). That way you bypass the regulator.
