Using 4 7-segment LED display old digital clock?

I've been doing a lot of reading on these forums of late. I'm new to the Arduino and have some ideas for projects after I get the basics into my head.

I have a couple of old digital clock radios with the usual red 4 digit 7 segment displays. Are these serially driven or just a gang of common cathode/anode LEDs?

One clock I have has jumbo (Bigger than 2") green LEDs and would be perfect for one of my projects.

Thanks. I need to fetch the clock from my storage and see what's inside. I'm getting pretty blind as I get older....
