I am relatively new to programming/Arduino but am trying to create a force sensor to measure the force exerted by a wire as it uncoils with the expectation that the force measured would be ~1g. Currently I am looking at this load cell http://www.robotshop.com/en/100g-micro-load-cell.html
Will it be compatible with Arduino? Also, would I need to purchase a HX711 Load cell Amplifier to be able to use it?

If your max load is 1g then a 1g (or even 10g) load cell would be much better than a 100g cell.
As Dave points out, most should be compatible with Arduino. Case in point, I've used three different load cells from three diff manufacturers now - latest is one of these Load Cells, NZ | Meltrons, NZ - Weighing Solutions - and they've all worked flawlessly. Basically, whichever is the cheapest + fits your needs is the best bet! The closer you can get to your ideal / max weight the better.
