Using a sound sensor to trigger an Infrared transmitter

I'm pretty new to Arduino. I was wondering if it would be possible to emit an infrared signal from a ir transmitter to a receiver using a microphone sound sensor? I want to be able to control the volume of my home speaker using clapping.
