Using an Accelerometer to drive a cart

Hi All,

I would like to control the forward and backward motion of a cart using a handheld controller. The idea is that when you move the controller forward, the cart moves forward. When you change direction, and move the controller back, the cart changes direction and travels backwards. I would like the speed and acceleration of the cart to be proportional to the controller. Can this be accomplished using an accelerometer?

It would be easier to measure tilt in pitch and roll axis with the accelerometer. Speed and direction can then be controlled by the degree of tilt.
