Using Arduino for Christmas Light Display without Vixen

I am new to DIY light controllers so have question. Is there any way to use the mega 2560 to sync lights to music without using the Vixen program?

Why? It looks to me like that is excellent software for its stated purpose.

Is it too expensive for you?

Do you want to do something different that Vixen doesn't do?

Vixen is open source and free for download. The concern is the amount of time to program it and bugs it has when running on my system. I have seen programs that allow a RPi to sync lights to music without having to program each channel via a third program, i.e. Vixen. Was just wondering if there was something similar for the Arduino.
