Using Arduino Mega 5V pin to power 12V sensor

Hi,

I'm using an array of sensors as i2c inputs to an arduino mega. Two of these sensors require 12V to be powered. Is it possible to use the 5v output pin from the arduino and step up the voltage to power the two sensors?

Thanks in advance

Which sensors? How much current required by each sensor?

They are two air flow sensors; datasheet specifies a max power consumption of 200mW for the 8-15V (12V optimal use) air flow sensors I'm using, so I will assume about a ~16mA current requirement.

Is it possible to use the 5v output pin from the arduino and step up the voltage to power the two sensors?

Not a good idea. The Arduino 5V output cannot be heavily loaded, and switching converters often add terrible noise to the power supply, so use a separate, well filtered 12V power supply for both the sensors and the Arduino.

If you need to switch the sensors on and off, use a high side switch, controlled by a standard digital output.
