using arduino mega with usb

hi!
I wanted to program my arduino mega in a way that allows me to let it react on keystrokes of a usb keyboard it is connected with. is there any way to work with the arduino mega as USB host and slave without using a usb shield??

Or perhaps an old PS/2 keyboard.
