I am a total arduino noob. I don't even have one yet. I just ordered it. I was wondering if there is potential for the Arduino to control Very big DC motors (ex. 50hp 500v). And also if it is possible for the arduino to act as a VFD for an AC motor of the same size. I have grand plans for an electric car project in the future and curious if the Arduino can get me there.
An Arduino can control a motor but you will need a fairly hefty DRIVER sitting in between the Arduino and the motor. 500V and 50hp means the driver will be fairly expensive. Commonly these accept either a serial interface or isolated control inputs, either of which can be done with an Arduino.
Same with the VFD...you have to pick out a VFD first then think about how to interface the Arduino to it.
