Check the original post. It was not "can/how do I use a GPS with the arduino", it's "how do I hook up a MAX2769 to an arduino and make a GPS out of it". A quick glance at Maxim's web site shows that the MAX2769 is not a complete GPS, it's an RF receiver designed to be an RF front-end used in building a GPS unit.
Yes, you can add a GPS to an arduino. As you point out, there are lots of ways to do this, lots of others have done so, and it's usually a pretty simple serial communications problem to interface one with an arduino. There's even a library (TinyGPS) to parse the sentences for you.
Don't worry, your project is certainly doable.
