Using Infrared Proximity sensor through glass ... possible?

Hello!

i am using a GP2Y0A21YK0F Infrared sensor to act as a switch so that when an object is close to a certain point a presentation on a screen starts.

it works pretty good, however now the thing needs to work through a thick glass pane, which the sharp sensor does not...

Before i get completely lost in tinkering with ir-emitting diodes. Is this at all possible?

It is possible, but is likely to have problems. Depending on the thickness of the glass, its composition and whether it has some coating, the IR signal will be weaker.
