I have a 120 watt 12v landscape lighting power supply. It works perfectly, but when I hook it up to a buck converter to reduce 12 to 5v it always cooks (explodes) the regulator. Assumming too much current. Can this supply be used?
Are you sure that it is a DC power supply and not AC ?

Look at the label on the power unit. The equal sign == tells DC, a horisontal snake figure tells AC...
