Ah yes, on reading a bit further, the Sparkfun device is indeed a pure player without any recording functionality. Adafruit appear, however, to have a device which is capable of recording also, albeit in "ogg vorbis" format.
Compression of the audio could still be a problem though, as you have pointed out.
