Using Shiftbrites in an Array/Grid

Greetings everyone,

This is a question that I've had for a while, but I've been unable to find an answer so far.

I'm sure many of you have seen the Shiftbrite Table by now... http://www.macetech.com/blog/node/93

Using the same hardware set-up that the Macetech blog has posted, would it be possible to run code to scroll messages across the array? Play pong? Display patterns similar to the "Daft Punk" table? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCA79Du-WqY

Or would this require additional chips like the MAX7221?

Any comments, ideas, or suggestions would be really helpful. Thank you.

It’s possible to do any 8x8, 9x9, or NxN pattern. However we experimented with scrolling text…it works, but really on a table like this it’s kind of boring. Too low res to fit much more than 1 character at a time, and people don’t want to watch text roll by all day. Patterns like the Daft Punk table are possible but 80% of the project is in the cabinetry, they did a really good job building it and figuring out the light diffusion problem. Also check Blip Labs example array to see an approach to LED driving and large area diffusion.
