Using the Arduino IDE with other microcontrollers

Hi,

does anyone know if I can use the Arduino IDE for other microcontrollers such as the EFM32 Leopard Gecko, ARM Cortex M0/M3/M4/etc controllers? I am not asking whether it is wise to use it (I guess it isn't the best IDE compared to the company's own IDE for their microcontroller), but just looking to see if it is possible without much hassle?

thanks,

Phil

You would have to re-write the Arduino core and libraries for each chip that you wanted to use. That could be a major undertaking, depending on how different the chip peripherals are. For example, MSP430, TI Tiva, and Microchip PIC32 all have separate IDEs at the moment, (some) STM32 have a separate core: https://github.com/rogerclarkmelbourne/Arduino_STM32 and even some less popular AVRs have modifications that need to be downloaded.
