Using two channels for one DC motor on a motor shield R3

I've got a motor that draws 2.69 A at full load, and I'm using an Arduino motor shield R3 with an Uno to drive it. The shield can only provide 2 A from one channel, and the setup I have now hits the current limit whenever I try to start the motor up. I've tested the motor once it gets up to speed and it only draws 0.75 A once it gets going, but I need to be able to provide more power while it is spinning up. Is there any way to change around the wiring so that the motor can draw current from both channels at the same time?

Motor specs:

McMaster-Carr
part # 6331K62
max 12VDC
Full Load Current 2.69A
Torque 0.38 in-lbs

If this fix is not possible, would the following motor shield work?

Pololu Dual VNH5019 Motor Driver Shield for Arduino (ash02a)

I can't see why not. It's advertised as an Arduino shield, and can handle more current than you need.
