I have a USB Host Controller Shield that I bought from Maplin years ago and forgot about.
Would it be a common thing for these shields to have the ability to be connected with only 0v,5v, and SCL/SDA or using serial TX/RX?
I'd like to try inputting from a Keyboard tonight, but just wondering if it is something I should be thinking might be doable or not?
Even if it were, there is no substitute for consulting the document for the shield, and a peek at the code recommended for using it.
What shield exactly?

There is no document with the shield. I don't have the shield with me.
I think the fact that it is a shield, they expect you to use it plugged in completely, but that isn't what I want to know.
I understand. So… you'll just have to get empirical and try it.
Good luck.

Your description of the shield is vague but most of the cheap clone USB host shields are copies of the circuits@home board. You can find schematics of the original board at https://chome.nerpa.tech/arduino_usb_host_shield_projects/ .
