uspeech serial monitor

Once I run the debugging code I open my serial monitor and when I press the keys such as c into the serial monitor to check each aspect (such as the volume or power of the mic), no values are given back. Any help is appreciated.

Did you ever get this code to work? I just uploaded it and when I opened the serial monitor received a bunch of random characters and did not see any of the options shown in the uSpeech tutorial.
