Variable from MQTT Callback not passed

I am using an M5Stick CPlus to read some MQTT data and display the results on the unit's LCD screen.
The MQTT message sent is (simplified) something like '2G'

In the Callback function the MQTT message is stored in Data[0] and Data[1].
Also in Callback I set a boolean NewMsg=true to indicate the arrival of a new message.

In the main program loop Data[0] and Data[1] can be retrieved and show the correct values.
However NewMsg is always 0 (false) although it seems to leave the Callback function as 1 (true)

Can somebody give an indication why the NewMsg variable is not passed correctly ?

make that volatile.

should those print out all the time or just when a new message is received? Like putting nthem under the

.

remove the delays.

I take it you are using a ESP32?

Add the the void callback(char* topic, byte *payload, unsigned int length) add the IRAM_ATTR for faster ISR operations. I, also, found putting the ISR before setup() seems to make things run better.

Here is some ESP32 MQTT code that I use:

I tried making 'bool NewMsg' volatile but that did not solve the issue.
Making it an integer 'int NewMsg' and switching it between 0 and 1 seems to solve the issue.
It's not the most elegant solution but it works. ( "if you can't solve the problem, avoid it " )

All the Serial.print lines and the delays are for debugging only.
I will remove them in the final version.

The M5Stick Cplus is indeed an ESP32.

I will try your suggestion to put the ISR before Setup. Thanks Idahowalker.
