Varmint Detector

I'm having an issue with armadillos digging up my landscaping. I tried a variety of different repellents but nothing seems to work. So now it's time to introduce a Nano. However, I'm not sure what sensor to build around.

My idea is to sense the armadillo's presence and make a rattling noise with a motor.

My experience with PIRs is they can generate false triggers during warm windy nights. I believe I would have to turn up the sensitivity to trigger on an armadillo so that would make things worse.

I'm reading that most ultrasonic sensors don't do well in an outside environment. The ones that do are expensive and may not pick up on my target. I can't determine if an IR or ToF sensors are better suited to be used outside.

Any insight on this is greatly appreciated. I'm getting tired of replanting my plants every morning. It's so dry here in Texas that some of the wildlife is coming out of the woods seeking moist soil to forage. They dig up my flower beds. I repair the damage and water the plants. It's becoming an endless cycle.

Yes, PIR sensors detect grass leaves blowing in the wind. Fences do not stop armadillos, if I remeber correctly. They either go under or they go over. Look into microwave sensors. I do not have a link to one, but they are regularly used with Arduinos to detect movement of animals.

I had no idea these existed. Thank you

I believe this is what I was looking for. I ordered 5.
Thank you so much.

Even electric ones?

Electric ones do. Just not practical in my application
