I am really new to arduino. I am going to get the official motor shield and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to connect two dc motors, how to control them with the motor shield and arduino uno r3. I also want to know what power the shield would need.

Welcome to the wonderful world of Arduino!
As you are a beginner, I'd like to suggest that you first try some simpler circuits and sketches. First check out the examples on his site, and get some books. One excellent book is the Arduino Cookbook.
