APA102 Led strips are nice too and don't have the high pressure on interrupts (precise timing) you get with some other pixels technology. They are more expensive though

Never heard of it, but the interrupts are no big deal IMO. You can always use a second microcontroller, like a cheap Pro Micro, to make an I2C Neopixel driver.
