Visual metronome for music studio

Hello, is anyone interested in building the following for me ?

My requirements would be:

1). Either a wireless or wired visual metronome, using MIDI out from my music gear (Roland DR880) that already has a variable BPM setting in it that sends audio out. The LED segments would be installed on my studio wall. The electronics to drive the segments would be housed in a box and sit near my control desk. I do not need sound capability for this project. I only need segments that flash from one beat to the next.

2). The light would need to recognize the count-in (which is always 4 beats), then display the first beat and the remaining beats in the timing (ie; 4/4 time). Essentially the count-in would be one color, the first beat of each 4/4 time would be a second color and the remaining beats would be a third color (ie; white, red, and green).

3). I don't plan for any part of the visual metronome to connect to anything other than the LED segment for display and the Roland DR880 for the BPM (MIDI out).

Anyone have ideas and are willing to build this for me and at what cost ?

I very much appreciate your time, thank you. Mo Brines Concord NC

What's the budget?

Hi zwieblum,

I very much appreciate your response, thank you.

Let me know what I may need to provide you with regard to any additional questions you may have.

I don’t run a commercial sound studio, it’s a moderate studio in my garage, but I do have the need for a visual LED light to assist musicians to help keep time and tempo.

I’m guessing you may need to know more detail from me, so you can understand what the cost to me would be ? I truly have no idea on the cost of this or my budget, but once I can answer any questions you may have, possibly you can provide me your cost for doing this ?

IMO this is the MIDI docs for the Roland:

Do you have any hardware you want to use?

No, I have no hardware to use, other than the DR880 and a MIDI cable.

To clearify: You want to use MIDI-Clock (MC) that is sent from the DR880?
MIDI – Wikipedia (sorry, the englisch wiki does not have enough information)

Yes, the Roland DR880 has the ability for me to select a snare shot as my click and I can change the tempo of that click in BPM.

I’ll also contact Roland today and make sure that what I select on the DR 880 as a click count can also be sent thru the MIDI out. I think the DR880 also has a USB port, I’ll verify that also.

Thank you for your time on this.

Zwieblum, I tried to contact Roland and they do not have support on the Boss DR880 anymore, If there is a way for me to help verify that the Master Clock is indeed sent form the MID out on the rear of the DR880, I'll do that, just let me know. Since the DR880 will act as a master, I'm sure it does send the MC. I just don't know that when I change the tempo on the DR880, does it change the MC coming out of the MIDI out. Makes sense that it would.

I'm not sure if MC would be the right way to go anyway, as the docs say it's always sent so it might be that it's sent from the moment the DR880 is turned on till it's tuned off  ... but there's not much detail information.

Ok, different idea: What about sending 3 different notes from the DR880 which are "played" as LEDs? So e.g. "C" -> white, "D" -> red, "E" -> green and the whole leadin + some at 4/4 would be CCCCDEEEDEEE.... and you would be free to make any sequence you like on your DR880

That would be perfect, as that would give me exactly what I was hoping for on the countin, the main beat and three following the main beat. I don’t know how to program the DR880 to send 3 notes though, but am willing to try. Would this idea still allow me to change the tempo ?

In theory the DR880 would send a command for "node on" and "note off", so you could program it exclusively from the DR880 including different tempo, length of LED flashes or LED color etc. using different properties of the note

Did you get the DR880 to send the notes?

I worked on it last night and have plans this morning to try and finish up. I’ll keep you posted today.

zwieblum, just an update. I built the first pattern of notes in 4/4 time AAAA for the count in. I'll build the 2nd pattern of notes; BCCCBCCC... Then I need to add these two patterns into a "song" in the DR880. I'm guessing the next step is to use the MIDI out on the DR880, connect a MIDI keyboard and see if the DR880 will play those notes from the song I built. Once I figure that out, how do I send you the "song" containing the notes so you can use for testing ?

Can you connect the DR880 to your computer and get the midi stream?

Finally, I have a count-in (in A notes), first beat of the next measure (in B note), and the remaining 3 beats (in C notes). So, I have AAAA BCCCBCCCBCCC... Now, I just have to figure out how to get those notes sent out thru MIDI on the DR880 to my PC and hopefully copy them to send to you. Thank you for your patience.

Oh, I forgot: if you have a MIDI keyboard and it plays the notes then everything is fine. You can send me a PN with your email for further details.

zwieblum, I have a MIDI keyboard and will try to play the notes from the DR880 on it today. I also sent you an email. Please let me know if you received it, thank you.
