Voltage/current question

So I've got a 12V solenoid I just want to open. Now to the silly question, what sort of 12V battery can I use? Could I for example just connect a 12V car battery to it and no harm would be done?

I'm thinking the current draw should be decided by the solenoid right? I'm not sure..

Best regards

12 V from car battery is fine.
Tap 12V after some fuse (or put a fuse in your lead).
If you accidentally short a car battery, your wire might get very hot in no time. You may get burnt or it could start a fire.
Shorting is pretty easy as all metal parts are usually connected to the battery minus.

Loads draw current, according to their characteristics. The power supply must be capable of supplying at least the required amount of current, but if the supply is capable of more, that is usually a plus.
