Way to indicate giving up on a thread

might be good to have indications of people who had posted on a thread but gave up, changing theire setting from Tracking to Normal or even Muted, because the OP was contentious, rude, overly verbose or ignoring suggestions, since there are no dislikes

Hmm, it might not be horrible to set a thread-local name prefix/suffix for your posts' handle that one could fit an emoji into. Mockup:

@DaveX😩 1hr post#3
...

But it would brand the poster with the bad opinion of their respondents, which isn't quite friendly.
Ignoring/normal/muted is probably more polite.

So what you'd like is something like a scoreboard at the top of every thread?

Thread: Muted: 35 Tracked: 75 Watched: 15

But, might as well add a line about the OP's status, not just the thread conditions, eh? Cover off habitual behavioral traits.

OP: Ignored: 55 Muted: 135
No point in showing the 'normal' count, that's the rest of the rezidents.

Yeah, that would be cute. One rude post from the OP, watch Ignored go from 0 to 60 in 10 seconds.

Doesn't seem 'friendly', or 'nurturing'. More of a 'tough love' approach; does provide instant feedback though, if the OP is aware enough to care.

Since I'm working for free, I prefer either a topic to be something I can provide insight into or to be good entertainment and I enjoy discovering which for myself.

Downside of the digital age there is no more expressive "slams receiver on hook."

Or, "blocked" - you call them, unplug the handset and leave it off hook.

Another BADGE to earn! I'm in!

Recommended badge  earned at 10 "Ignored" - being frozen out seems appropriate!

What do you try to achieve with that?

provide some feedback before someone gets banned or ignored

Sometimes I untrack simply because of getting tired of where the thread is going.  Or, it's meandering.  Or, getting too deep for me.  No reflection on OP.

so there's a difference between someone "tuning out" because they're no longer interested in the thread or because of the OPs attitude

StackOverflow has user rankings. If the crowd does not like you, regardless of being right, they downvote your response to oblivion. Not very open. No one would ever see my Most Bedazzling Annoyatron? mostBedazzlingAnnoyatron - Wokwi ESP32, STM32, Arduino Simulator

What are you trying to accomplish by doing this?

I very often change tracking just because I've lost interest in the thread; not because there's anything wrong with the people in it.
