I would like to supply the power directly to wemos d1 mini via its dedicated 5V pins and connect just the usb d+ and d- wires to its micro usb connector. Will it work for me?
Yes you can, just don't forget to connect GND as well.
Anyway you can power it by the 5V pin and simultaneously connect the USB normally without generating conflicts.
There is a diode that cuts the pass to the USB 5V when there is already 5V on the board.
