What are shields?

im having a hard time understand when or when not to add shields. is it because of the components it carries?

There is more than one meaning of the word "shield" in English

Please give an example of a shield that you have a question about

Hi,
Shields are generally PCB-mounted circuits that fit on protyping boards.
They "easy" the life of the experimenter.
But everything in a shield can also be mounted externally and connected to the boards.

Shields allow you to easily and reliably connect the necessary modules to the board without thinking about the correct connection, but make it difficult to connect anything else besides the shield itself

For all the time I have been working with arduino (more than 5 years), I have not used any of them

But several times I made shields myself
