"Jack" might also be a term for the female connector. I think I've used the below plug with my arduino. "M" might be the size.

Yea, could be used I guess. I also associated jack with those old 1/4" phone jacks used in telephone switchboards and old hi-fi. Plug and socket seems to be better general term that covers all forms of mate-able connections?
