What do you do while building?

What do you do when you are building anything with Arduino (designing, soldering, building, experimenting)
do you listen to a TV in the background?
do you listen to music? what kind of music? what songs are enjoyable to work to?
do you listen to nothing but silence?
do you talk with someone?

Interested to hear what people do while working with Arduino.

I am usually designing my next project in my head, which when it gets exciting leads me to putting LEDs in backwards

Most of the time, I program in silence. If music is already playing I'll let it go on, but when I'm focused on something, I can't really appreciate the music.

But when I'm doing something more physical, like building stuff (i.e. woodwork, etc), I pretty much listen to music every time. And for some reason, I find classical music really really nice when doing such work, even if it's not what I usually listen to.

continue thinking about the next fix/feature
making notes
go through e-mail / forum / book /comic
get a cup of tea
read datasheets of sensors

Sometimes I find that light background music helps with focus. I like some classic, like classic Pink Floyd or Grateful Dead instrumental, LOL! At other times I turn that off.

The worst thing is someone talking for attention, radio or tv news or talk shows or just some annoying twat babbling away.

Internet. You can do everything on the internet. Search for answers, help some noobs, flame a discussion, read news, emails, purchase stuff, sell stuff, write notes on what I’m doing and learning between MS word crashes. When I am building stuff like soldering or drilling cutting measuring I can’t don’t other things. I want it done and out of there.

When I am assembling over weekends, I listen to a local radio station ( Cape Town South Africa ) that has all-day Golden Oldy records playing, 60s to 80s stuff.

Brings back fond memories ( I am 65 in your Earthling years )

I’m almost 400 in dog years.

I concentrate. I don't have anything going. But I always have some music in my head for some reason - this has nothing to do with hobby electronics, its always been there (right now, for some unknown reason, it's playing I Want A New Drug).

When I was a new programmer, I used to keep Rush Limbaugh on the radio for the three hours he was on, but I outgrew that or something.

I either have TWIT, Revision3, or loud music playing (preferably dubstep or electronic, heavy vocals are distracting).

I also finding vocals distracting when I am doing some thinking or focusing especially in the same language as the vocals. If the vocals are in a language I am not currently using for my thoughts, they are fine. It's interesting.

My old digital design professor used to say this as well. Something about music stimulating the artistic side of the brain, but translating language is on the other side of the brain? Humans are also wired to pay attention to language over other things, in case the phrase happens to be "theres a lion behind you".

Or "free pizzas!"

Programming - usually quiet and peace. If the room is too noisy or a TV is on, then headphones and some NewAge/soothe music.
Soldering and other handiwork - general radio music, possibly also with a chatty DJ.

Otherwise, the subject heading "What do you do while building?" the answer is "Building" - Duh 8) ! ! !
(Note that there is a space between the 3 "!" to avoid the bootloader.... )

If I’m working on a prototype, I want silence. No music, no noise. Just the hum of machines, computer servers, scopes. I need to concentrate.

If I’m doing rote “assembly line work”, i.e. assembling the products I sell, I have a movie playing on my iPhone in front of me (Youtube, Amazon Prime, Comcast, etc). I’ve built hundreds of these units and pretty much can do it without much thought/thinking on my part… the movie playing helps with the boredom and let time pass by quickly.

I have a few friends that I like working on robots with, and we usually sing along to whatever song is on the radio (K Earth 101.1) We've found it can make even boring and brainless tasks a blast! XD

When soldering I concentrate. I don't like the smell of burning flesh, especially mine...

Very cute signature!

Aw thanks a lot! XD I always had bunnies growing up and I just think they're adorable. By the way (since I'm already off thread topic :cold_sweat: ) would you guys mind answering my post entitled "help a robotter out"? I'm interested in which robots everyone used with getting started. Thanks in advance!

Do you have a link to your post?

BTW, your post counter seems to be stuck at zero?
