What happens to unused ports when the board is running something unrelated?

Hi all, first post here, so please let me know if I do something wrong.

I have some of my digital pins wired with some stuff and then I re-upload something else to test only a park of that same setup. So:

Do I need to unplug everything else and just have the stuff for this particular bit of sketch while I test only that part? What sort of current go through those pins unused in the sketch?

Thanks!

You can leave the ports connected, the arduino will ignore them if they are not referred to in the test program.

Would any current come out of the unused (by the sketch) ports?

None of any significance.

The pins default to input when the controller is reset and they stay inputs until you tell them otherwise. The maximum output current is 1µA according to the data sheet.
