I'd like to figure out how to pull out time info as well as lat and long and direction if the module …

I'm wide open to suggestions :))) Start by reading the manual or datasheet for the device, since you don't seem to know what data it actually provides.

The GPS receiver (with USB connector) came with a Topo USA software package from Delorme. From what I understand it is a fairly common unit.
