what to buy to get started?

Hi,

I'm new to this and was hoping someone with a bit of knowledge could give me some advice on getting started.

Sorry if this has been asked already, I did a search, but couldn't find any useful info.

I have good programming experience (I'm a programmer by trade), but practically no electronics experience. I was hoping to buy a basic kit to get started, learn a bit and have a tinker, but I'm unsure what to buy. The offical store on this site is sold out of the starter kit. I've done a search on the net, but all I can find is a whole lot of 3rd party kits.

I was wondering whether its worth getting an "arduino-compatible" kit (am I going to have any issues with a non-genuine copy?) or should I wait until the official one is back in stock?

I was looking at the freetronics experimenters kit (Experimenter's Kit for Arduino | Freetronics) as its available at a store near me, or should I look at something else?

Thanks.

Hi wired67,

Read the next (previous ?) subject "Hesitating". If you have windows 7 or use Mac you will have no problem but I unfortunately have Win 8 and therefore consider selling my "starter kit" (unused). The book I bought (now for sale ) is very good it explains everything with examples and pictures etc. I have been working with electronics for a very long time but still found the book worth buying.
If my boards don't interest you I recommend the Arduino starter kit.

Thanks Semiduplex,

I took a look at your thread and It looks like you're just selling the board? being new to the electronics thing, I was hoping to pick up some sort of starter kit with a bunch of components to play with, as I otherwise have no idea what to get.

I've done a little more searching since my first post and found that I can the the official ardiuno kit from amazon.com, and there was another starter kit from the adafruit site that looks like it contains a genuine arduino uno, so I might consider getting one of those.

I'm also still interested to hear from anyone about whether the arduino compatible boards are worth it, as i'm able to find them at a local electronics store. (I hate having to wait for new toys to get delivered when ordering from overseas.)

You are right I am only selling the boards (and the book). In case you want to know what you need to get started, and want to buy it from the local store, you can always copy the content of a starter kit.
You can find it under Products, The Arduino Starter Kit gallery (pictures of everything that is in the box).
Unfortunately I have no experience of the compatible boards.
Good luck with your new hobby.
