I just found out I have been invited to talk to the open Source Hardware conference so I put in a late request to exhibit at the NY Maker Faire. Well I have been accepted for that and so will be in NY from the 13th to the 19th.
So the request is is there anyone who could let me sleep on their floor for a night or two? If there are enough volunteers I can save some money and buy more electronic bits.
Failing that if anyone wants to meet me I should be there so I will take my crash helmet
I really can't believe you haven't gotten any takers yet, GM; if I lived in NY I would put you up for the night or two (whatever you needed) - unfortunately I am in a sandland oven, so be glad its not being held here (though its cooling off - I think it was only 113 F today!)...
Take the subway trains and don't take buses. Buses are terribly slow. First time I went to NYC with a friend we asked a police office where to take the bus to China Town and that was a mistake. We dosed off a couple times while sitting on the crawling bus and good thing we didn't lose our wallets. You can walk faster. Fifth (ave?) is for shopping expensive stuff but I guess Seventh is for regular citizen shopping
Ok I am now in New York, by gum it't hot. I left England with jacket an jumper but now they have been canst to the wind. I am staying in Woodside, Queens and have been awake for about 21 hours now soimight just sleep.
I've never been to NYC as a "tourist": I was always there on business, and under the gun because I was the "flown-in expert" to handle a crisis. I'm also not a "city person", so my one big regret was not getting out to see the Statue of Liberty up close.
The WTC Memorial has been getting a lot of coverage on TV lately, and appears to be well worth seeing: it looks like a beautiful design, and there's lots of complex engineering that may be visible while it's still under construction (or may not: it's not clear how much "special access" they gave the TV crews). You'll certainly get a unique view of it now, because they'll be planting a small forest there that will drastically change its appearance. So I wouldn't put it off "until next time" if I could avoid doing so.
I took in the WTC Memorial saw the Statue of Liberty from the Staten Island ferry, walked the High Line in Chelsey, walked over the Brooklyn Bridge, visited the Guggenheim, walked through Central Park and gave some attention to the NY Craft Beer Week.
That is on top of all the great people I met at the Maker Faire. I spent most of yesterday sleeping and most of tonight not.
