What's that thing called?

I am sure some of you know what I am talking about immediately. Anyway, you know the white stuff (some are almost transparent) used on the PCB to hold components together (sometimes it's used on capacitors sometimes on coils). What is it called? Where can I get it?

I know that some on some cheaper boards wax is sometimes used to achieve the same purpose, but the this kind of clue seems to be stronger and cleaner. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Thanks in advance!

Potting compound?
Epoxy?
Silicone?

Thanks for the quick reply... By the way, the compound I mentioned feels pretty hard to the touch...

Let's say it could be one of the three you mentioned, which one would you recommend to use to secure components (especially in RF circuits)? Thanks.

Hot glue?

I think I know what you're talking about. Kind of looks like a foam but hard? I've seen it commonly in monitors holding things in place.

No idea what it's called though, sorry :P.

It depends on what sort of RF, how high is it.
I have only see silicon used, is the stuff you want smooth to the touch?

Yeah, the stuff I saw was smooth to the touch (kinda like plastic... but not sure exactly what it was)...

So it looks like silicon to me. The problem with using ordnary silicon is that it gives off corrosive (to electronics) gas as it cures. Therefore there is a special electronic grade silicon that is a bit more expensive than the home depot kind.
There is a good choice here:-

I always presumed it was glue from a hot glue gun. Seems I was wrong.

Trouble with hot melt glue is that it melts (the clue is in the name) at the sort of temperatures you run electronics at some time.

Thanks Grumpy M, after reading over the Wikipedia article (Silicone - Wikipedia) it seems to me that you are right on the money.
