Where can I find a 1-pin female header?

Over the weekend, I put together Sparkfun's Prototype shield. The last step is to solder three 1-pin male pins to the board (1 each for a button and 2 LEDs). Then if you want to use the button or LEDs, you use a wire with an alligator clip on one end.

I figured a better way was to use three 1-pin female headers. But everywhere I look, the minimum is 2-pin for females. I'm ready to buy three and go to town with a dremel tool, but I was hoping for a better solution.

Anyone know where I can buy one? Or have any other suggestions?

If you're a hobbyist, you're not likely to find a better choice.

It's probably cheaper, though, to by a 5-pin (or larger) header, and cut 1-pin ones off the end. The best way is to cut "pin 2" more-or-less down the middle, and file/sand off the excess plastic: if you try to split them off without wasting a socket, you'll be disappointed, because it's almost impossible.

That is my backup plan.

If I understand what you are asking, I had the same requirement, and I use these:

They come in three flavors: F/F, M/M, and M/F and are handy for all kinds of things.

Thanks. A male to female cable would work. But I think I'll go with slicing a 5 or 6 pin housing into three 1-pin housing.

Of course, the shipping costs for outweigh the part costs, and I'm in no hurry, so I'll wait until I have to order something else before I order this.

Thanks for all the replies.

I left the males on mine because they are much easier to replace when they break off. Also I don't use heavy enough hookup wire to make good contact in the sockets.
