Over the weekend, I put together Sparkfun's Prototype shield. The last step is to solder three 1-pin male pins to the board (1 each for a button and 2 LEDs). Then if you want to use the button or LEDs, you use a wire with an alligator clip on one end.
I figured a better way was to use three 1-pin female headers. But everywhere I look, the minimum is 2-pin for females. I'm ready to buy three and go to town with a dremel tool, but I was hoping for a better solution.
Anyone know where I can buy one? Or have any other suggestions?
If you're a hobbyist, you're not likely to find a better choice.
It's probably cheaper, though, to by a 5-pin (or larger) header, and cut 1-pin ones off the end. The best way is to cut "pin 2" more-or-less down the middle, and file/sand off the excess plastic: if you try to split them off without wasting a socket, you'll be disappointed, because it's almost impossible.
I left the males on mine because they are much easier to replace when they break off. Also I don't use heavy enough hookup wire to make good contact in the sockets.
