My VW's and my Yamahas synched around 3000 but much off that was clutch time. When my clutch cable snapped I was able to get 3 miles and 6 lights in rush hour traffic to the bike shop to get a cable and install it.
Try the sensor out with a resistor and led between signal and ground. If you pick the wrong wires or voltage, all that you lose is the led and maybe the resistor if it's low watt rated.
