where to center pots on custom joystick?

Building a custom joystick - wondering if i should have the pots at middle of resistance range when joystick is centered? Seems logical - but you know where 'seeming' can get you... :o

All the joysticks that I have used are made with 2 potentiometers that are centered (each axis output around 512 on 10 bit Arduino ADC) when the stick is straight up.
