Where to get components?

No sure if this is allowed to ask but where in general are you guys/gays getting parts need to assemble shield, etc?

I am looking to get the following parts but am going crazy having to search several sites to complete my list. Is there any sites in particular that ships most of what you are looking for quicking and accurately?

Thanks

digikey

I tried them first. Almost made my head explode :o with all of the options that came up for a simple .25 part.

I looked at Jameco and they seem a bit easier to navigate through but I wanted to feed back before I sent an order over to any online source. The locak 'Shack has nothing in the way of parts. :-/

Any oher advice or do I just take a few Advil and give Digikey a shot?

jameco is fine, but they only offer ups shipping, which sucks when you want a 3$ bag of resistors and it cost 9 in shipping (and ups takes 8-10 days to get to my house)

digikey's site is actually easier to find what you need, if you know what you need

start with resistor, just type resistor in in the search, you already have some of the spec's

All Resistors .25w or .4w or .6w 1

go with quarter watt, find that filter and apply it

now

Metal Film 1% - if possible

theres a filter for tolerance AND material

the magic trick here is to click 1 filer at a time and you can narrow it down, so lets say 1% is first found, apply it and look for metal film

once your filtered down to quarter watt 1% metal film then look for values, place em all in the cart and move on to the next group of components (which in this case is capacitors)

on the other hand jameco sends you a catalog every few months

Some of the better places to buy from are those with a huge selection. So take those advile and a couple of redbulls and make a night of it.

Mouser might also do you well

Allied is another good one.

Thing i like about mouser and allied is they still have a physical catalog. Too me its allot easier to thumb threw the catalog then order online.

This place has been recommended in other threads as a good source for bulk parts.

I've been considering rolling the dice on one of there surprise boxes and see what i get.

Allied seems to have most of what I need in stock.

However after going over the parts and all of the different options, I am thinking I may need to get a better understanding of electronics before tackling this part of my project.

Is there a good source or book any one would recommend to get started?

What about RS?

Is there a good source or book any one would recommend to get started?

There are a great many sources and books on this topic. It can also get quite in depth mathematically. I doesn't take long before the books and sources start getting into Ohm's Law and all of that. Fortunately your looking at reproducing something that has already been designed so all of that isn't really needed. So just Google the parts to get a better understanding of the,.. Wikipedia should be a decent source to learn about them.

I use to take electronic classes back in high school. But have forgotten most of what little i learned over the past 12 years. So as a refresher before buying the arduino i picked up a helpful little kit. Comes with a project book, some components and a breadboard. The project book was good about teaching some of the basics without diving into all too much of the math behind it all.

Part of the wide variety of parts is different manufactures but most of the verity is in there specs. You need to have a pretty good understanding of you circuit and the power needs across it. But the project your working on tells you all the specifics you need. So enter there full descriptions into the catalog search and see what comes up. Then choose the cheapest one that's inside the parameters you need.

Yeah, I thought about it and figured I would research each of the parts I was not sure of.

What stumped me was that one of the parts I needed was this an electrolytic capacitor 10uf 16v or 25v. I could not locate this on the allied site but did find this part:

CAPACITOR, AL ELECTROLYTIC; 10 uF; 0 TO 25 WVDC; -75%, -10% AND 50%, -10%; BB

Not knowing if this will work or not is the problem.

Since I am in no rush to get this up and running (I am waiting on a few other shields and parts) I will orde what I can understand and ask about what I don't (After searching of course).

Yes that will work. The important part is the 10uF and the fact that it can handle the required voltage.

Thanks.

Ordering some parts now.

Also try Octopart when searching for hard to find parts.

I'm usually not real picky where I get parts... BGMICRO, ALLELECTRONICS and others are great to deal with... but if I had to pick who I keep going back to the most... I'd say my orders for stuff are done mostly through Mouser... easy process, fast delivery and they nearly always have exactly what I'm looking for.

hows shipping?

Surplus:
All Electronics
BG Micro
Electronics Goldmine
eBay (assorted delaers)

New and Branded:
Mouser
Digikey
Jameco (at least, they're trying. Last time I bought from them they were still mainly surplus)

Mouser has been edging out digikey recently, if only because they let you sort search results by price... Both Mouser and Digikey have really nice search capabilities.

Ordered everything from Mouser except the two items they are out of stock on:

The only thing they were missing is the LF356 and the 220 nf capacitors.

The total order came to $26.10.

Now to order the blank shield boards from Adafruit. ;D

On the very up side, I got my Tellymate shield in the mail today!!! ;D

Is there a good source or book any one would recommend to get started?

I would highly recommend the book, "Teach Yourself Electricity and Electronics, 4th Edition" by Stan Gibilisco (ISBN 0071459332 or 9780071459334). The cover of the book is a little hokey, but the content is excellent, starting with basic electron theory and will take you all the way through analog and digital concepts to computers.

Both Mouser and Digikey have really nice search capabilities.

jameco used to have that system, then somewhere along the line they turned to what they have now, so for me it takes for ever to find something just to get stuck with a 9$ shipping bill.

I was asking about mousers shipping cause last time i checked they did not offer usps, so therefore I keep going to digikey (usps shipping is like 2.5 bucks on small items, even on a rather large package it was only 4)
