I have experience from an electronic device that upon a strike between solid steel and solid concrete produced a high frequency signal that no controller would catch. We ordered a redesign like a diode feeding a capacitor, acting like a memory.
To detect a collision between a vehicle and a ton of cotton, or a ton of steel, will give very different readings.
