I would like to use the Arduino Cloud to see live data and graph it, store it, etc. Basic stuff like temperature.

I also would like to be able to remotely update the code on the board.

From what I gather this can be done.

However, I am not sure what board WITH ETHERNET will work with the Arduino Cloud. Do any?

Or, am I out of luck and have to use Wifi?

I really would like to stay away from wifi because a cable works fine and wifi only introduces more attack surface.

Thank you.

the Nano 33 IOT is to me the simpler and more affordable board with wifi and cloud connection.
I tested it on Arduino cloud with examples provided with IDE and it works perfectly.

How would you add Ethernet and the ability to upload new sketches through the Ethernet port using the Nano 33 IOT board?

this a functionnality from Arduino Cloud. But I dont tested yet.
For waht I remember, a dedicated sketch (like a library) is uploaded along with your code and allow uplodaing on the air.

I propose you to ask the Arduino Cloud wich will have good (better than mine) explanations

EDIT: and the internet access is driven through wifi only. Maybe I read your needs too quickly? You need a cable for internet in your config?

My first Arduino was an EtherTen by Freetronics. It is a Uno with Ethernet and SD built in. They also make an EtherMega. Both are expensive but the former gave me a good start. I think you are best off with a Mega and a W5100 Ethernet shield. This shield has an excellent SD slot included.

No comment on uploading new programmes. I think it is possible.

the Arduino IoT Cluod only supports a few boards with WiFi and the library is written only for WiFi. EDIT: it supports Ethernet with Arduino Portenta

Thank you for the replies everyone.

If the Arduino Cloud could do the upload to a board with an Ethernet port it would take the cake and I would buy right now.

However, as @Juraj mentioned, this functionality does not exist, currently, except for the Portenta board.

The Portenta is really cool. But also $350+ here in USA, so it starts to be come just as expensive as some of the industrial automation solutions I am looking to disrupt by using a less expensive Arduino.

Ultimately what I think I will do is use a Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 to be based right next to an Arduino board with Sensors. That way I can remote into the Pi, over LAN based Ethernet, and change the code, etc. I might even use the Pi for the whole project.

As Arduino starts to bump into more "Pro" worlds with the PLC options, Portenta, Opta, etc, I hope they will add the ability to upload code via an Ethernet port.

Thank you for the help!

if you do require a RPi + arduino and wish to transfer data between the devices you

1. can plug the Arduino Serial USB into a RPi USB port
2. the Arduino will appear as a RPi serial port - I seem to remember it appears as /dev/ttyUSB0
3. information transmited to Arduino Serial is received by /dev/ttyUSB0

program the RPi in C++, Java, Python, etc

an idea. the IoT Cloud supports esp8266. and the esp8266 Arduino can use w5500 as network interface for the WiFi library. (well known network interfaces for the WiFi library are WiFi and SoftAP)

Good call!

Do you think it would be better to store the data on the RPi SD card or store it on the Arduino?

I think it might be easier to have it on the RPi though this is my first data logging project so I may be missing some good design principles on a project like this.

a Raspi is an overkill here in my opinion.

I agree. But, since the Arduino Cloud does not play with Ethernet for some reason, it has therefore been established that using an RPi is the only way to remote upload new code so I am going with it.

Unless you meant it is overkill to read and store data to an SD card on the PI vs the Arduino?

Either way I have what I need to proceed and thank you for your input.

I must have missed something here - like what the "cloud" is. I don't see how Arduino's cloud can be hardware specific but, if it is, that is a compelling reason to use somebody else's that isn't.
