Which board for MIDI shield should I get?

I'm wanting to build a MIDI controller, and all research on these are using the UNO.

Now I'm a newbie, and trying to get the right info for the job.

Not only will it pass MIDI, but it will 12 inputs and 12 output.

Would the Mega 2560 be the better option?

Would you use the serial for comms to the MIDI shield ?
